It was only a matter of time before Notre Dame got on the board with 2024 recruiting. They added a significant building block when defensive tackle Brandon Davis-Swain‍ pledged to the Irish on the day of the 2022 Blue-Gold game.

A player who recently shined at the Ohio Under Armour Camp, BDS shows the kind of traits on film that make him an outstanding prospect.

Height: 6’4”

Weight: 246

Projected Position: Defensive tackle

ISD Grade: 91 (4-star)

National Average Grade: 90.3 (4-star)

What he does best:

Davis has the kind of twitch every defensive line coach wants to see from their 3-technique. He can get up field in a hurry with a very good first step.

He shows explosive potential with his lateral movement. He’s going to be a one-gap penetrator that can make plenty of plays in the backfield.

That lateral quickness can help him develop into an elite pass rusher from the interior. He makes this guard look silly trying to hard set him. Davis-Swain is outside working an edge so quick here and the blocker has no time to recover.

Very few pass rushers can become great if they don’t have the motor. There are no worries in that department for Davis-Swain. He checks that box.

What he needs to improve:

Sometimes he can get stuck working the full man and gets stalemated at the point of attack. He doesn’t give up on the play, but he needs to be a bit more consistent if he’s not working a gap.

He needs to work on that lean when finishing as a pass rusher after he wins with his initial move. If he does, then a lot of the pressure he generates can turn into sacks more often.

What’s his ceiling?

Davis-Swain has the potential to be a highly productive interior pass rusher who can create havoc on slants and stunts. He has to get a lot bigger and stronger before he gets to Notre Dame, but he has plenty of time to do so.

If he continues to refine his game and maintains that same level of quickness as the weight is put on, then he’ll have the potential to be someone who makes a ton of plays as a high-level starter who is also part of 3rd down pass rush personnel.
