Notre Dame BBQ One Of CJ Carr's Favorite Visits
CJ Carr has enjoyed some great trips to South Bend, which helped lead to the five-star 2024 quarterback’s commitment to Notre Dame.
Last Tuesday’s BBQ was right up there with any of them, according to Carr.
“It was great,” Carr said. “This was probably one of my favorite visits to Notre Dame, if not my favorite.
“It was great to just get around most of the commits and then also the kids that Notre Dame's continuing to recruit and we're starting that relationship.”
Virtually every uncommitted visitor we’ve spoken to about the event has mentioned Carr talking to them about why he – and fellow commits Cam Williams and Jack Larsen – chose Notre Dame.
“You just try and show them the brotherhood that we've built,” Carr said of his pitch. “The 2024 class hasn't been together for too long, but I go meet up with Cam and Jack and it's like we're best friends already. So that's one thing.
“And then another thing is you go to a bunch of different schools that have won national championships, and it's not as big of a deal if you win another one. Notre Dame's one where if you win a national championship, you're a legend there. I think that's a big recruiting pitch that I tell some of these guys.”
2024 Missouri wide receiver Ryan Wingo was one of Carr’s top targets at the event.
“This is the second time I met Ryan and he's awesome,” said Carr. “His parents are also awesome. We got to meet them.
“It's been great to get around him. We were on a team with him and Cam Williams, jumping around with him, playing a bunch of mini games and playing basketball and throwing the football around a little bit. It was just great to be around him and get to know him.”
2024 California wide receiver Emmett Mosley also mentioned the importance of having an elite quarterback in place in the Irish’s 2024 class.
“He was also great,” Carr said of Mosley. “We played cornhole a little bit with him and got to compete. Competing with these guys is also really fun. It was just overall a great trip.”
Competition was a theme of the event, almost more than recruiting itself.
“I think it is getting to see some of these kids who can really compete, how they carry themselves,” said Carr. “I love competing, I love doing it with my friends Cam and Jack, and then continuing to compete with some of the other kids out there. It's always great to have a little friendly competition.”
Carr also enjoyed the opportunity to reconnect with Marcus Freeman, Tommy Rees and the rest of the coaching staff.
“It was great,” he said. “They make you feel like family there. Talking with Coach Freeman with a bunch of the commits was also awesome. That's what we started off the day with.
“Then, obviously, Coach Rees is always amazing when we're trash-talking him playing cornhole or playing basketball. It's always awesome.”
