There weren’t many people who left Notre Dame Stadium on Saturday excited, at least not many that weren’t part of Marshall’s travel contingent.

But Mercer and Charlton Luniewski were among the few others who did.

The 2024 Cincinnati offensive linemen were in South Bend for their first recruiting trips to Notre Dame and the twins left impressed with what they experienced from a recruiting standpoint.

“It was incredible,” Mercer told ISD afterward. “It was extremely impressive. It left an impact on myself. We were lucky enough to have our grandpa bring us as well. Aside from a quick turnaround from a game last night and a six-hour drive starting at 4 in the morning, it was a blast. Serious. Extremely impressive.

“We walked in the indoor practice facility and it was all set up. It was awesome. They had a bunch of games, a bunch of meals. We got all measured and stuff. It was extremely impressive. They had a lot of treats.”

The Cincinnati Hills Christian Academy standouts also spoke with multiple Irish staffers, including Notre Dame recruiting analyst Caleb Davis.

“We had some great conversations with him,” Mercer said. “We also got to talk to Chad Bowden a lot more, some great guys all around. We had some pretty significant conversations with those two.”

The message from the Notre Dame staffers was encouraging.

“Just to keep doing what we’re doing, recruiting will go the way we plan on it, it’s just a matter of time, getting better and continuing to work on our game,” said Mercer.

“It meant a lot. Even being recruited by a school like Notre Dame, having that interest, that’s extremely special. It was just a confidence-boost in all honesty. It shows us that we can land big-time offers.”

After Saturday’s visit the twins are hoping to remain in contact and return at some point.

“Just continuing to build the relationship,” Mercer said of what’s next. “We’d like to go an actual tour of the facilities, the campus and what student life would be like. In general, from an athletic standpoint, it was great. It was really awesome to see how the team functioned. Unfortunately, it was a tough loss.”

The twins aren’t sure what’s next overall, but they do expect to continue hitting college games around the country.

“We have a few invites,” said Mercer. “I think we’re planning on going back to Ohio State again, Duke. It would also be awesome to travel to UK and probably UC since it’s so convenient.”
