When Brandyn Hillman received a flurry of offers a couple weeks ago, Notre Dame was the only school to get the 2023 Virginia athlete locked in for an official visit.
The Churchland High School star made that visit this past weekend for the Irish’s game against Stanford.
“It went good,” Hillman told Irish Sports Daily. “I really enjoyed my time up there.
“I got there Saturday, so it was game day. We went through the game day experience with the campus tour, met all the coaches and everything.”
Hillman is being recruited as an athlete who could play running back, receiver, defensive back and even Wildcat quarterback. He had conversations with head coach Marcus Freeman, offensive coordinator Tommy Rees and defensive coordinator Al Golden while in South Bend.
“I had talks with all the coaches, so the weekend was pretty good,” he said. “They were just letting me know how interested they are and everything that is going in the program.”
Hillman called Rees a “great guy.”
“He’s really passionate about what he does,” he said of Rees. “He's coaching the right way.”
He had a similar feeling about Golden.
“Great guy,” Hillman said. “That guy is amazing. Great guy.”
He had multiple conversations with Freeman throughout the weekend.
“Coach Freeman was just telling me about the process really,” he recalled. “He knows everything is going quick. He told me it's OK, don't be afraid of anything, just take my time.
“Coach Freeman is an amazing person, amazing husband, amazing father, amazing coach, everything. He's an amazing man. Everything that he was saying was really heart-touching.”
Hillman had the opportunity to spend time with several of the 2023 commits who were also visiting, including running back commit Dylan Edwards.
“We were with each other a lot, so I really bonded with a lot of them, especially Dylan,” he said. “We really bonded a lot over the weekend, being that both of us were on official visits.”
Hillman’s offer sheet includes schools like Virginia, Virginia Tech, North Carolina, Kentucky, Tennessee, Boston College and Vanderbilt among others. He added Oklahoma to that list when he returned to Virginia on Monday.
He plans on taking additional official visits before making a decision, but isn’t sure yet how many.
