ISD Game Predictions: UNLV

October 21, 2022

It’s Friday again, and that means game prediction time once again.  The Irish…man…who would’ve ever thought they’d be 3-3 right now? UNLV is the latest team hoping to steal one from the Irish.  Will the Irish rebound from a miserable performance last weekend in Notre Dame Stadium?

What the hell do I know?  Obviously nothing when it comes to this team.  I’m not sure anyone does, including the team or the coaches.  Which team shows up and why?  I don’t know.  Just have to wait and see what happens.

Logic would suggest that Notre Dame regroups and puts a whooping on the Rebels, but logic and the 2022 season don’t seem to be going hand-in-hand thus far.

Your guess is as good as mine…clearly.

When Notre Dame gets good quarterback play, they move the ball at a +500 yards per game and over six yards per play clip. When they don’t, they can’t score points on anyone.

So who shows up on Saturday? I’m betting on the former. I don’t think Drew Pyne will struggle the way he did against Stanford, and he’ll likely be able to operate with a clean pocket.

I’m also going to bet Rees gets two backs on the field more often, and Tobias Merriweather is a bigger factor.

Defensively, UNLV is likely to be without their starting QB and this could be a “save our guys for conference play” type deal. I like Notre Dame to dominate after a poor performance.

No one would blame any Notre Dame fan for being skeptical about this team after last week. I'm skeptical, too, but not skeptical enough to think they'll lose to UNLV.

UNLV's defense has too many holes to exploit, and despite the final result, the Irish offensive line again had another strong game against Stanford. That will continue and the offense will ride the running game to a big day on the scoreboard.

Will the Irish finally get their havoc problem fixed? I couldn't say, but they'll keep the point down again and Notre Dame will roll to a comfortable victory.

Don't get too excited about the final score because this will be a frustrating one for much of the first half and few Irish fans will leave the game feeling everything is well again.

Notre Dame comes out tight and looks like the team we last saw lose to Stanford a week ago. But late in the second quarter, the offense does get rolling and it never stops.

The defense surrenders a big play early in the second half before allowing the Rebels a late touchdown when the game has been decided.

It may not feel like it, but this is a step in the right direction, albeit a small one.

The Rebels are worse than Stanford. Purdue didn't bring its drum and UNLV won't be bringing its turnover slot machine because it won't be used.

UNLV’s starting quarterback and running back are banged up and will travel, but I don’t believe the staff will push them to play as the Rebels have a bye next week and key games to finish the year.

Notre Dame will have a big day on the ground led by Audric Estime as he goes over 100 yards for a second time.

I've picked the Irish to win big prior to each home game, and yet they've struggled inside Notre Dame Stadium.

Despite the fact that Notre Dame is a 26 1/2-point favorite against UNLV, I expect a close game and for the Irish to trail at some point in the second half. Ultimately, it's another close win for Notre Dame at home.
