The Latest | Notre Dame & Taeshaun Lyons

As we say, things can – and often do – change in recruiting…and they can change quickly.

After eyeing a late-October/early-November announcement for several weeks, Taeshaun Lyons‍ may not be ready to decide until the end of November or later.

That may not seem like a huge deal, but with National Signing Day inching closer and closer, under this timeframe, the Irish would need to start engaging other options before the 2023 California wide receiver is ready to decide.

Since Lyons’ official to Notre Dame back in September, we always believed there was a very good chance it would be the last official visit he’d take. Had he stuck with his original commitment dates – which would have been either this Friday or next – that would have been the case, but the biggest reason for pushing back his announcement is that he’s decided he would like the opportunity to check out other schools.

Lyons picked up an offer from Texas A&M at the start of the week. That offer alone wasn’t a game-changer so to speak, although he is interested in possibly taking a visit to College Station.

He’s looked into taking unofficials to Washington and Oregon in recent weeks, but neither worked out and rescheduling doesn’t seem like a major priority.

Miami is the one school that has remained a constant over the past few weeks and is likely the biggest factor for pushing back his timeline.

One reason we continued to doubt Lyons would take any more visits was because getting to Miami for a visit seemed virtually impossible with his previous timeframe.

Getting to South Bend for a night game on a Saturday following a Friday night game on the West Coast is difficult. Getting to Miami for a noon game on Saturday following a Friday night game on the West Coast simply doesn’t make any sense.

The Hurricanes are hosting rival Florida State next Saturday night and it might be a lot easier for the Irish to be patient if Lyons took that visit and then went into decision mode. But he has a game that night before and seems to prefer going to the Hurricanes’ home finale against Pitt on Nov. 26th.

We do believe the Irish are Lyons’ favorite school to this point and if he had to choose today, feel confident he would pick Notre Dame. But, after talking it over with his camp, he’s leaning toward letting the process play out a bit longer, understanding that Notre Dame cannot afford not to start looking at other prospects.

The Irish aren’t going to remove Lyons from the board – if anything, they may start recruiting him even harder than they’ve already been, which has been pretty hard. But, they also cannot put themselves in the position to wait a month for a decision without evaluating other options.
