When the news broke earlier in the week that Kenny Minchey‍ was decommitting from Pittsburgh and taking an official visit to Notre Dame this weekend, it seemed a commitment to the Irish was inevitable.

But, the 2023 Tennessee quarterback had a few things he wanted to get a feel for during the trip before closing the door and shutting the process down completely.

Those boxes were checked as Minchey closed the door and shut down his process completely with his announcement that he was committing to Notre Dame today.

The absence of a quarterback in the Irish’s recruiting class has been a glaring one for months, but through persistence and due diligence, Notre Dame found a way to come away with one of their very top targets without reaching for an underrated or limited prospect.

Sources have privately confidently told Irish Sports Daily they’re convinced the 6-foot-2, 210-pounder is one of the top 3 or 4 signal-callers in the class. They point to his delivery, accuracy and athleticism as “different” than anything Notre Dame currently has on its roster.

The Pope John Paul II has been extremely quiet in recent months, avoiding the spotlight and hoopla that typically come with being a serious Notre Dame quarterback target, leaving outsiders to speculate on where he was leaning.

He doesn’t necessarily complete the Irish’s class or even the offensive skill position portion of it, but he certainly completes the framework of both.

Minchey becomes a part of a group that already includes three four-star running backs, three four-star receivers and a four-star tight end. The Irish are actively looking to add another talented receiver/athlete to the mix.

The Hendersonville, Tenn., product camped at Notre Dame in the summer of 2021 and had extensive contact with the coaches since being offered back in July. But it was important for him to get back on campus and get around all of the coaches in person before completing the flip.
