Notre Dame Football Headed to TaxSlayer Gator Bowl to Face South Carolina Gamecocks

December 4, 2022

No. 21 Notre Dame (8-4) will face No. 19 South Carolina (8-4) in the 78th TaxSlayer Gator Bowl on December 30th in Jacksonville.

The Gamecocks are one of the hottest teams in the country as South Carolina ended the season with wins over Clemson and Tennessee - two top 10 programs.

Notre Dame has played in the Gator Bowl three times and holds a 1-2 record.
1976: Notre Dame 20 Penn State 9
1999: Georgia Tech 35 Notre Dame 28
2003: NC State 38 Notre Dame 6

The Fighting Irish lead the all-time series 3-1 with the most recent clash being in 1976, which ended in a 13-6 Notre Dame victory.

South Carolina head coach Shane Beamer is in his second year with the program and won the 2021 Duke’s Mayo Bowl 38-21 over North Carolina last season.

Marcus Freeman, who is in his first year as the head coach at Notre Dame, did coach in last year’s Fiest Bowl as the Irish fell to Oklahoma State 37-35.

All eyes will likely be on the quarterback position for both programs as Notre Dame will start sophomore Tyler Buchner or freshman Steve Angeli as junior Drew Pyne announced his intentions to enter the NCAA Transfer Portal on Friday.

South Carolina features former five-star signal-caller Spencer Rattler, who has thrown for 2.780 yards, 16 touchdowns and 11 interceptions in his first season with the Gamecocks after transferring from Oklahoma.

Kickoff is set for 3:30 PM ET at TIAA Bank Field.
