It didn’t take long for Al Washington to be impressed with Joseph Jonah-Ajonye‍.

And it didn’t take long for the 2024 Texas defensive lineman to be impressed with the Notre Dame defensive line coach.

The two sides only recently connected, but on Tuesday, Washington informed Jonah-Ajonye that he had an offer from the Irish.

“I was really excited about it because he’d came by my school and we talked later,” the Oak Ridge High School standout told Irish Sports Daily.

“He told me a lot of stuff. He seems like a cool dude. I’ve been watching Notre Dame for a long time. It’s definitely one of my top 15 schools. They’re really good. I like them.”

Jonah-Ajonye’s current offer sheet also includes schools like Texas, TCU, Baylor, Texas Tech, USC, Missouri, Kansas, Kansas State, Nebraska and Utah among others.

The Irish have had his attention for a while.

“I like their defense,” he said. “That’s what I love most about Notre Dame. I like the way they can move defensive linemen around, putting certain guys in the five and then move them to three. I like how they utilize everybody.”

The 6-foot-4, 240-pounder is excited to move forward with the Irish.

“I think the next step is just to build a relationship and try to find time for me to go up there to Notre Dame to see the campus and see what it’s about,” he said.

So far, he’s only taken one visit this year, to Texas last week. But he’ll be on the road again this weekend to see Texas A&M and Baylor.

He doesn’t have any other visits set up yet.

“I’m just taking it one step a time,” he said.

Jonah-Ajonye is planning to make a decision sometime toward the end or at the end of his senior season.

“I’m looking for the school that can utilize my abilities to the best so we can win games, potentially win a championship, and I’m looking for a school that makes me feel like it’s family, where I feel welcome and where I don’t have to hold back on anything, where they just know me for me. Not just for my abilities, a school that really wants me for me and my personality.”
