Putting together a good receiver group in a recruiting class is a bit like figuring out a starting five in basketball. It’s okay if some guys share the same skill set, but you want them to be different enough that they can excel in specific roles within an offense.
Notre Dame needed to land a bigger body who could win contested catches this cycle and they found that in Micah Gilbert. With Cam Williams and Isiah Canion already in the fold on top of adding to the group they signed in December, Chansi Stuckey is building a squad that is deep and talented.

What he does best:
Gilbert can win contested catches. I think everyone assumes high pointing the football when they read that, but it’s everything from that to winning in traffic. He has good body control and the strength to win in tight coverage.
He’s going to be a back shoulder option. He does a nice job adjusting his body to shield a defender from the football.
While he’s not a burner with his speed, he has some sneaky ability after the catch. He’s more slippery than some other big bodied receivers and he should put up some YAC numbers.
What he needs to improve:
He doesn’t have great short area quickness. He has shown some good footwork when working on the boundary, but he’ll need to be really precise as a route runner if he’s going to play in the slot.
What’s his ceiling?
Gilbert is in the same mold as current Notre Dame receivers Jayden Thomas and Jaden Greathouse. Maybe they don’t have elite 40 times, but they know how to get open and create separation when they are covered.
He has the potential to develop into a quality starter on the boundary or be another bigger slot option that can be a mismatch against smaller nickel defenders. Notre Dame needed to add another receiver who fit this profile this cycle and they landed a good one.
