Tyler Buchner Will Enter NCAA Transfer Portal
Notre Dame quarterback Tyler Buchner has announced he will enter the NCAA Transfer Portal after having a conversation with head coach Marcus Freeman.
Dear Notre Dame, I love Notre Dame. The people, and especially my teammates, are what makes this place special to me. I have decided to enter the transfer portal in order to explore my options, and decide what is best for my future. After discussions with Coach Freeman, remaining at Notre Dame is thankfully an option I’m continuing to consider. I am truly grateful to everyone for their support through this process. Love, Tyler Buchner |
Buchner has appeared in 13 games for the Irish and that includes three starts made in the 2022 season. For his career, the La Jolla (Calif.) native completed 56.8 percent of his passes for 949 yards, six touchdowns and three interceptions while adding 459 yards and seven touchdowns on the ground.
There won’t be a lack of attention for Buchner’s services as several top programs had eyes on him entering the portal following his Gator Bowl performance where he led the Irish to a 45-38 victory over South Carolina. Buchner tallied 273 passing yards, 61 rushing yards and five touchdowns, which made up for three interceptions in the win.
Buchner opened the 2022 campaign as the starting quarterback, but an AC joint injury in the Marshall game sidelined him for the next ten games.
This spring, Buchner entered practices in competition with Wake Forest transfer Sam Hartman for the starting job. Hartman completed 13-of-16 passes for 189 yards and two touchdowns in Saturday’s Blue-Gold Game.
Freeman highlighted Hartman’s performance following the game on Saturday, but stated the quarterback competition was far from complete.
“I think we still have a quarterback battle,” said Freeman. “You can't determine a winner or a loser based off one practice, practice 15. Again, you can't base a decision off of what we view is a certain outcome. There's a lot that goes into it.
“There's a lot that goes into a quarterback battle, but obviously the quarterback play. I know just being out there, we've got to go back and watch the film. We're not blocking the end, there's some protection issues, we're dropping balls.
“We have to look at the film. I know the stats might not say it. But listen, both of them are tremendously talented. We'll go back and evaluate all 15 practices and continue to look at it as we move forward.”
If Buchner moves on, sophomore Steve Angeli will likely step into the backup role he had for 10 games last season.
Coming out of high school, Buchner held offers from Alabama, Arizona, Arizona State, Columbia, Georgia, Michigan, Nebraska, Oregon, Penn, San Diego State, TCU, USC, Utah, Washington State and Yale. Buchner’s high school offensive coordinator, Danny Mitchell, is currently coaching at UAB.
