It would be difficult to imagine defensive back recruits not wanting to play in Notre Dame’s defense with how they’ve played this season. It’s no surprise that Cree Thomas‍, from the same program as Ben Morrison in Arizona, would want to be a part of what the Irish have going right now on defense.

An athlete who has competed in the decathlon in track and field, Thomas is a highly productive ball player with position versatility.

Height: 6’1”

Weight: 170

Projected Position: Cornerback

ISD Grade: 89 (3-star)

National Average Grade: 89.0 (3-star)

What he does best:

The best defensive backs don’t just know how to find the football. They put themselves in a position where the football finds them. That’s the case with Thomas, who had five interceptions from his safety position this fall.

He’s not the biggest guy, but physicality is not an issue with Thomas. He has an edge to his game and is very good vs the run.

Thomas is a finisher. That same physicality comes through at the catch point.

I really like his compete level and that combined with his short area quickness are always good to have.

What he needs to improve:

He needs plenty of physical development. He’s skinny and needs to get a lot stronger. The same could have been said for Morrison, he’s proven to be plenty strong enough even when he was lighter as a true freshman.

Does he have the speed to play outside corner? I haven’t seen him handle enough vertical threats and don’t have a verified time for him.

What’s his ceiling?

The speed part of it will give me a better idea of how high it is because I think Thomas is a good football player with a high floor. He has the ball skills, physicality, and competitiveness to develop into a player for Notre Dame regardless of his position.

That’s why my comp for him is former Irish corner Bennett Jackson. He played outside, but ended up moving to safety when he went to the next level. He’s not likely going to be someone who plays right away, but once he physically gets big and strong enough, he should be in the mix.

Who he could be:

Former Notre Dame CB Bennett Jackson
