2025 OL Matty Augustine Talks Notre Dame, Timeline & More

Matty Augustine‍ saw his recruitment take off after the 2025 Connecticut offensive lineman decided to turn his attention from basketball to football.

But while Augustine’s college future is on the gridiron, he hasn’t completely given up playing  basketball just yet and is currently getting ready for the hoops season at Brunswick School.

With the 6-foot-7, 290-pounder’s focus on the hardwood for now, he doesn’t have any college visits set for the winter.

“I don't know,” he says of when he may hit the road again for visits. “It might be more springtime visits. Just because of basketball, it's kind of hard, so probably more springtime visits.”

Augustine did visit South Bend for the Ohio State in September and was blown away.

Late last month, he was in Ann Arbor for Michigan’s game against Ohio State and was also impressed.

“It was sick,” Augustine said of his Michigan trip. “It was crazy. We got on the field for warmups like an hour before and it seemed like the stadium was already basically full at that point.”

The Greenwich, Conn., native has stayed in touch with Notre Dame throughout the fall, communicating mostly with offensive line coach Joe Rudolph, but also other staffers and head coach Marcus Freeman at times.

“It's kind of just, 'Keep working, grinding in the offseason,'” Augustine says of the message from the Irish.

“They keep saying that they'll be out here hopefully in the next couple of weeks to visit Ethan (Long) and I. I'm excited to get them back out here.”

Long is Augustine’s close friend, teammate - in football and basketball - and one of Notre Dame’s top targets in the Class of 2025 at safety.

When Augustine does hit the road again, he has a trio of schools he wants to visit.

“Really it's Notre Dame, Wisconsin and Michigan,” he says.

Augustine wouldn’t label that his top three, though.

“Obviously, it's really tricky to recruit during your season, but those are some of the teams that have been showing a lot of interest even during their seasons,” he says.

Wisconsin head coach Luke Fickell, offensive line coach Jack Bicknell, assistant offensive line coach Cullen Casey and Director of Scouting Casey Rabach have helped keep the Badgers on Augustine’s mind.

“I love the coaching staff,” he says. “Coach Bicknell, their o-line guy. Coach Cullen, he's their assistant o-line guy. Coach Rabach, he is their recruiting guy…He played at Wisco. He's great. I'm usually with him a lot during these visits. I love him.

“Obviously, Coach Fick is amazing. That whole staff is amazing over there. Aside from the staff, just the school itself and the campus, the town of Madison is just beautiful.”

While Augustine may not hit the road until the spring, it’ll likely be very close to decision time when he does.

“Probably won't get to summer,” he says of his commitment timeline.

“It'll probably be spring.”
