Chris Burgess‍ only started playing football a couple of years ago, but the 2025 Chicago defensive end wasn’t surprised to find himself announcing his college decision on national television during Saturday’s All-American Bowl.

“I thought from the jump that this would happen because my end goal was to be a big recruit when I started playing football,” Burgess told Irish Sports Daily beforehand.

“So, I'm really proud of myself that I came this far.”

And, as he announced today, the next part of his journey will bring him to Notre Dame. Burgess gives the Irish 12 verbal commitments in their 2025 recruiting class.

He joins CJ May‍, Joseph Reiff‍ and Dom Hulak‍ to give the Irish plenty of pass rushing off the edge in the years to come.

Burgess chose Notre Dame over his other finalists Ohio State, Michigan and Alabama.

“I'm 100 percent confident,” Burgess told ISD. “I'm trying to get this out the way and commit early to get a head start.”

He added that he’s “most definitely” going to become a recruiter for the Irish.

“It's more than football at Notre Dame,” he continued. “The degree is worth a lot. After football, I'm still going to have lots of life because the degree is so big.”

The Notre Dame coaches, especially defensive line coach Al Washington, made strong impressions.

“They promised to develop me the best they could,” Burgess said. “My best relationships come from them.

“I like (Washington) a lot. He's a young d-line coach. He just got there like two years ago. He's the one to want to be coached by.”
