2018 Sachse (Texas) defensive back Isaiah Humphries committed to Penn State in January, but the three-star prospect added an offer from Notre Dame on Tuesday morning.

Defensive backs coach Todd Lyght had been recruiting the 5-foot-11, 185-pounder for over a year and was able to give the news to Humphries.

“I got on the phone with Coach Lyght, and he told me they were offering me,” Humphries told Irish Sports Daily. “I was excited about the offer. I get excited about any offer, but Notre Dame is definitely a major offer.

“I was born in Indiana, so getting an offer from Notre Dame is pretty cool.”

The Texas native visited South Bend for the Blue and Gold game last April and came away impressed with what Notre Dame had to offer. However, contact dropped off as the Irish struggled through the 4-8 season of 2016.

“They came and went a little bit,” explained Humphries. “The coaching changes came, and then the new defensive coordinator came. When he came in, they watched my film, and they liked it enough to give me the offer.”

Lyght’s honesty is one thing Humphries appreciated during his recruitment, and while he might have been frustrated, Lyght came through with what he told the Sachse star.

“My relationship with Coach Lyght is good,” stated Humphries. “When he told me they were going offer me, but I needed to get weight on. It didn’t come, and I kind of got discouraged a little bit. That’s how it is sometimes when schools don’t want you.

“He came through with the offer to show he wasn’t lying. That was one thing I liked about Coach Lyght. He knows my dad too.”

Leonard Humphries starred at Penn State during the early 90’s, and his son does take words from guys who have played in the league to heart. Lyght had a very successful career, and Humphries is paying attention to his message.

“It holds some weight,” Humphries said of Lyght’s background. “When you have someone that has done it before, they know how to get there. When he see’s that I could be successful, it shows me something about myself. They see I could do something they did and they became successful. It’s a good feeling when choosing a potential coach.”

Most may feel Humphries was a lock to Penn State as he is a legacy. However, the decision to commit to the Nittany Lions was all his decision. Humphries admits his dad stayed out his recruitment so he could make the best college decision for himself.

“I went there, and I liked it a lot,” explained Humphries. “My dad told me he wasn’t going to help me at all with the process. He doesn’t want to force me to go somewhere, and if it doesn’t pan out, he doesn’t want me to blame him for the rest of my life. That’s what his mom told him when he was going through his recruiting process.

“I made the decision on my own, and I liked the things happening at Penn State.”

Humphries holds offers from the likes Baylor, Cal, Duke, Houston, Mississippi State, Notre Dame, Oklahoma, Utah, and Vanderbilt, but he is happy with his commitment to Penn State.

“I am pretty set, but you know, whatever happens, happens,” said Humphries. “I am not searching for another place or anything.”
