Notre Dame hired defensive coordinator Mike Elko in December, and it’s no secret there has been a focus on getting more athletic on the defense for the Irish. The coaching staff has focused on players with the ability to get to the football with speed and athleticism in recent months, and 2018 Benedictine School (Va.) linebacker Wendell Davis is a name to keep an eye on heading into the spring evaluation period.
The 6-foot-2, 215-pounder heard from linebackers coach Clark Lea on Wednesday, and the three-star prospect is interested to hear more.
“Coach Lea was telling me that he watched my film in a staff meeting and he enjoyed it a lot,” Davis told Irish Sports Daily. “He saw I could be a good blitzer. My strength of my game is my athleticism, and I can run well for the position. I am a active player too.”
Davis holds double-digit offers from the likes of Boston College, Duke, Indiana, and Pittsburgh. The Virginia native got a chance to see a few of the schools recruiting him earlier this spring.
“Boston College, Duke, and Pittsburgh are recruiting me the hardest right now,” stated Davis. “I have visited Duke and Pittsburgh. I will be visiting Boston College in May.”
The trip to Durham impressed Davis as he experienced a tight-knit program and see’s the Blue Devils on the rise.
“Duke was really down to earth,” explained Davis. “It had a good family vibe, and I felt at home. All the coaches were nice and genuine.
“They kind of had a rough year, but they are moving up as they have in the past.”
On his visits, Davis wants to find out where teams see him playing, as he is being recruited as an inside and outside linebacker. Davis has thought about majoring in Architecture, so getting a good look at the academic side is important.
“I want to find out how the schools plan on using me when they get there,” Davis said. “I also want to experience the overall vibe of the school.
“A school like Duke is nice because I can get a good education and play football at a high level.”
One thing you won’t catch Davis doing is offer watching. Davis isn’t waiting on one offer from a specific school and is simply enjoying the chance to play at the next level.
“I don’t have any offers I am waiting on,” he stated. “I have never been that type of guy. I will take any offer because I just want a chance to play at the next level.”
