Notre Dame doesn’t have too many prospects left on their board in the 2025 recruiting cycle. With 20 commitments currently in the fold, there are only so many spots left in the class and they’ve narrowed their focus heading into June’s official visits.

The one position where things remained unclear was defensive end. Well, everyone received some clarity today when the Irish picked up a commitment from Gordy Sulfsted‍.

A multi-sport athlete out of St. Xavier in Cincinnati, Ohio, Sulsted projects to start out on the edge, but could eventually grow into an interior defender at Notre Dame.

Height: 6’5”

Weight: 240

Projected Position: Defensive end

ISD Grade: 90 (4-star)

National Average Grade: 89.0 (3-star)

What he does best:

I love defensive linemen who also play basketball. On the basketball court and the football field, it’s evident that Sulfsted has very good reactive athleticism.

He’s long and uses that length well at the point of attack.

He has above average twitch and displays solid lateral explosiveness. He also does a really good job of converting speed to power as a pass rusher.

Sulfsted has a relentless motor and that is always going to translate at any level.

What he needs to improve:

He does work some moves as a pass rusher, but that is something that will need to be refined with him on a more consistent basis.

He does utilize his punch as a run defender, but he has to get stronger and generate more shock with his hands.

What’s his ceiling?

I really like this addition to the class for Notre Dame. Sulfsted has the frame to get a lot bigger, but the athleticism to remain outside. If that happens, he does have the potential to develop into a very good sub-package interior rusher with his lateral twitch.

This is a tenacious football player who gets after it as a blocker on offense (tight end) and has plus traits that could see him develop into a defensive lineman who is capable of playing all three downs from multiple alignments.

I think he has a similar skill set to former Notre Dame edge Ade Ogundeji, but he’s a more advanced player than Ogundeji was at the same age.
