The recruiting world changes every minute it seems, but things haven’t changed for 2018 Pine-Richland (Pa.) quarterback Phil Jurkovec. The five-star prospect has almost been committed to Notre Dame for a year (May 16th), and Jurkovec is working on building relationships with the new staff.

“I have shut it down,” Jurkovec said of his recruitment. “No one is really trying to get me on campus.”

Quarterbacks coach Tom Rees replaced Mike Sanford and the 6-foot-5, 190-pounder is enjoying getting to know his future position coach.

“I really like him,” stated Jurkovec. “It’s huge he was a quarterback at Notre Dame. He knows what life is like at Notre Dame. Having him as a coach will be a lot of fun.

“He’s kind of mellow and chilled out. He’s very intelligent. You can tell that by just talking with him. He knows the game really well.”

Offensive coordinator Chip Long has also made sure to be in communication with Jurkovec over the past few months. Jurkovec already knows Long has emotion and wants to light up the scoreboard, which is a positive for any quarterback.

“He’s fiery and competitive,” Jurkovec said of Long. “He’s coming in and is all about taking care of business. He wants to put up the points, and he can’t wait for the offense to get going.”

It’s no secret the Irish are off to a blazing start in the 2018 recruiting class, and that’s led by early commitments from Jurkovec, Markese Stepp, and the Ademilola twins.

The commits talk daily in their group chat and are figuring out which prospects are going to get the full-court press.

“We are pretty close,” said Jurkovec. “I’ve met most of the guys in the class if not all of them. We have a good group right now. We have a lot of time until Signing Day, so we’re trying to find the specific guys we want to go after.

“We’re not 100 percent sure who we are going after right now. We have to talk to the coaches still.”

Notre Dame has two receivers currently committed in Micah Jones and Braden Lenzy. Jurkovec is fired up to work with both and knows Lenzy could make him look good with his elite speed.

“He is someone who can take the top off the defense,” explained Jurkovec. “His speed is crazy. I saw he just ran a 21.76 in the 200m. That’s crazy. I am excited to throw to him because he’s just so fast.”

Jurkovec will now dive back into football mode after leading Pine-Richland to the State Title game in basketball. He also could also make an appearance in South Bend next weekend.

“I think I am planning on being there,” Jurkovec said of Notre Dame’s Spring Game. “I am not 100 percent sure.”
