Notre Dame is no stranger to crossing the state line and recruiting the top talent in Ohio. The Irish and defensive line coach Mike Elston are doing just that again, as 2019 Lakota West defensive end Steven Faucheux is set to visit Notre Dame for the Blue-Gold Game on Saturday.
“Notre Dame seems like a special place to be a football and a student,” Faucheux told Irish Sports Daily. “I am glad to have a chance to talk to the coaches, see the campus and facilities for myself.”
The 6-foot-4, 265-pounder hasn’t had much direct contact with Elston and the Notre Dame staff due to NCAA regulations, but he is aware of the interest the Irish have in him.
“I haven’t had much contact to this point,” explained Faucheux. “Since I am only a sophomore, schools can’t really reach out to me except through my coach. Coach Elston visited my school a couple of times, and my coach has talked to him a few times about me.”
“Facilities are important, but all top programs have excellent facilities,” stated Faucheux. “I’m looking for a program that will feel like a family while I am there and after. I want coaches who will challenge me as a player and help me reach my potential.
“I also want a school that will prepare me for life after football.”
The Lakota West star visited Cincinnati, Kentucky, Michigan, and Tulane last fall, while he was at Auburn, Indiana, Louisville, Michigan State, Ohio State and Penn State in January.
However, Faucheux isn’t done with visits just yet.
“I plan to go back to Cincinnati, Kentucky, Louisville, Ohio State, and Penn State,” Faucheux said. “There are also some other schools I hope to visit if they show more interest and a couple of other schools that have offered that I’d like to visit again if I can work it out.”
While he is only a sophomore, Faucheux is already feeling the pressure of the new recruiting rules the NCAA is likely to pass in June.
Official visits will start earlier, and prospects will be able to sign in December, which essentially shortens the process for some prospects.
“I want to start to narrow the list, but there is time for that. I think a handful of schools will start to stand out for me as I get deeper into the process," said Faucheux. "It’s a busy plan, but that’s the only way I can get to talk coaches because of NCAA rules.
“The NCAA just shortened it, and I can’t even talk to coaches yet, but I can take official visits in less than a year. I am just trying to feel it out until I find the right fit.”
