Everyone could see that the future was bright for the Notre Dame offensive line after watching them perform during the College Football Playoff. The train doesn’t appear to be stopping any time soon either with the Irish adding their third offensive line commit in the 2026 class.
Tyler Merrill is the latest coveted prospect to join the class. It’s not hard to see why he holds offers from programs like Georgia, Alabama, Michigan, Ohio State, and Penn State. He’s a massive individual with the potential to play tackle, but also kick inside to guard.

What he does best:
Merrill is built like a monster and plays with violence. His strength shows up in a big way at the point of attack.
He’s not the most agile in space, but he can get to the second level and he’s a finisher. Merrill can be a mean dude on the field.
He does a nice job of using his length and playing balanced in pass protection. He handles inside counters well and plays under control.
What he needs to improve:
He’s better suited to a gap scheme right now and will need to improve his footwork as a zone blocker.
He is a bit too obvious with how light he is with his stance when pulling. That’s a habit he’ll have to get out of to not give a tell for opposing defenders.
What’s his ceiling?
Merrill is someone who can play tackle, but I think his best position could end up being inside at guard. He’s such a massive presence who can move people off the ball.
I think he could end up being a very similar player to UGA guard Tate Ratledge. He was an All-SEC player and is a projected day two pick in the upcoming NFL Draft. Ratledge could have played tackle, but was an elite guard in the SEC for multiple seasons. I think Merrill has that kind of potential.
