Notre Dame Legacy Richie Flanigan "Super Excited" About Irish Offer
Yesterday’s offer from Notre Dame wasn’t a surprise for Richie Flanigan.
The 2027 Wisconsin defensive lineman actually found out earlier in the month that it would be coming on St. Patrick’s Day as part of the Irish’s Pot of Gold Day push.
But it was still extremely meaningful.
“I was super excited,” said Flanigan, whose father was a standout linebacker for the Irish in the 1990s and whose older brother will be a freshman tight end for Notre Dame in 2025.
“It's the team I grew up watching as a kid, and obviously with the family history, it's a really big deal. It was probably the best feeling in the world.”
The Green Bay native also has offers from Wisconsin, Duke and Illinois.
Notre Dame defensive line coach Al Washington was the one who informed Flanigan of the offer.
“He said he liked me as a player,” Flanigan said of Washington. “He liked me as a person and obviously with the family history, it was just a good offer.”
The next step in the process for the 6-foot-3, 285-pounder and the Irish is getting back to South Bend.
“I've got to get down there for myself and my recruitment to see what it's like,” he said. “Obviously, I've been there with my brother, but I want to get down there and meet the coaches for myself and get to know them like any other school and eventually make a decision.
“We're going to the spring game, so that'll be good.”
He has a few other visits in the works as well.
“I'm going to Michigan for a practice and Wisconsin,” he said. “I also think Duke and Northwestern. I got invited to those and I'm still working on dates for those.”
He’s still young, but Flanigan doesn’t anticipate his recruitment playing out for an extremely long time.
“I kind of want to make my decision relatively early, probably next season, maybe a little bit after my next football season,” he said. “I want to be able to build with my class and the coaches rather than committing at the last second and not really knowing anyone.”
The Irish are well-positioned at the moment.
“Obviously, they're a really great school and I don't have that many offers right now, so they're obviously one of the ones at the top and they probably will be at the top until the end of my decision.”
