Cade Cooper’s impact at Malvern Prep (Pa.) goes well beyond what shows up on Friday nights.
The 2027 Pennsylvania wide receiver has emerged as one of the program’s most complete players, combining physical ability with a level of preparation and leadership that stands out even in a strong program, according to Malvern Prep head coach Dave Gueriera.
Gueriera pointed to a combination of traits that have made Cooper one of the more unique prospects he’s coached.
“It’s a combination of things,” Gueriera said. “He’s got the physical traits, size, athletic ability. He’s got big, strong hands. But then there’s that work ethic piece that not a lot of kids have. He’s always focused on his craft, always looking for pointers to get better, doing film work.
“Physically, of course, it’s there, but it’s everything off the field. It’s everything he does in preparation. That’s what I think makes him special.”
The Malvern, Pa., native is expected to take on an even larger role this fall, contributing on both sides of the ball, lining up at safety on defense and being even more involved in the offense.
The Malvern Prep head coach also highlighted Cooper’s personality and the way he impacts those around him.
“He’s got one of the best personalities out there,” Gueriera said. “He’s got a big, booming voice. He’s always smiling, always laughing. He just brings the best out of people.”
His presence has translated into a leadership role within the program, something Gueriera said is rare, especially at the receiver position.
“I get a few guys like that every couple years,” Gueriera said. “But at that position, we haven’t had anybody like him that can do the things he can do.
“He does it all. He works hard. He’s a really good player and he can lead. He’s got Ray Lewis-type leadership skills.”
That combination has also translated to the recruiting trail, where he has attracted nationwide interest and Notre Dame has made a strong impression.
Cooper’s most recent visit to South Bend only reinforced that connection.
“He loved it,” Gueriera told Irish Sports Daily. “He loved Notre Dame. He loved everything about it. He was beaming.”
Notre Dame’s appeal extends beyond the field.
Gueriera is familiar with Notre Dame, having coached current Irish offensive lineman Peter Jones in high school. Gueriera is familiar with Marcus Freeman, has gotten to know receivers coach Mike Brown and has coached against incoming freshmen Joey O’Brien and Garyson McKeogh.
He believes the program’s atmosphere aligns closely with Cooper’s personality and priorities.
“I think he fits culturally,” Gueriera said. “Just knowing Coach Freeman and having Peter Jones there the last couple years, I think Malvern is very similar. The people make the place.
“When he went there and saw Joey O’Brien, met Coach Freeman and Coach Brown, he was beaming. I just feel like that could be the right fit for him academically and athletically. And it doesn’t hurt that Joey O’Brien is kind of recruiting him.”
