Saturday's return to South Bend was different for 2027 Wisconsin defensive lineman Richie Flanigan, who was already plenty familiar with the Irish.

Richie Flanigan‍ had been to Notre Dame several times before, but Saturday’s trip was the first time he made the trip on a recruiting visit for himself.

The 2027 Wisconsin defensive lineman’s father, Jim, was a standout defensive lineman for the Irish in the early-90s and his older brother James is an incoming freshman after signing with Notre Dame this past December.

Flanigan made trips to campus during his brother’s recruitment, but after receiving a scholarship offer from Notre Dame a month ago, he was looking forward to getting back as part of his own recruitment and he did that for this weekend’s Blue-Gold Game.

“It was really fun hanging out with all the guys there, seeing the spring game,” Flanigan told Irish Sports Daily afterward. “The way they did it this year, I liked it when they did offense versus defense.

“It was sweet to see the guys competing out there. It was nice.”

The 6-foot-3, 275-pounder, who also has offers from Duke, Wisconsin, Northwestern and Illinois, appreciated the opportunity to look at the University through his own lens.

“It was a different experience I'd say, especially taking it in for myself now and being a recruit instead of being there with my brother,” he said.

The Green Bay native enjoyed the festivities before and after the game as well.

“We had the tailgate before the game in the indoor,” he said. “It was really sweet. Then they took us down. We were on the field for warmups and we watched the game and then we had dinner after that.”

He goes to Duke for a visit next weekend, but expects to be back in South Bend multiple times this year.

“Getting down there probably this summer, gameday visit for sure,” he said. “Just getting to know the coaches more for myself and being down there a lot.”

Notre Dame is certainly going to be a factor in Flanigan’s recruitment.

“It's definitely one of the schools at the top for sure. They've got a great school, great football program, great coaches.”

The only question remaining is whether he will make the same choice his father and brother ended up making.
