A late arrival didn’t take away from Brayton Feister’s opportunity to get a detailed look at Notre Dame this past weekend.
The 2027 Ohio linebacker arrived in South Bend early Saturday morning after a late-night trip and spent the day getting an in-depth look at the program, including extended time with the coaching staff.
“Everything was great,” Feister told Irish Sports Daily.
The 6-foot-3, 230-pounder met with head coach Marcus Freeman and linebackers coach Brian Jean-Mary before taking in the Blue-Gold Game, then returned to the facility afterward for a detailed film session.
“We went into Coach BJ’s office and talked a lot of ball,” he said. “We went through some of the film during the spring game and started learning a little bit of the playbook.”
That on-field discussion stood out, particularly as Notre Dame outlined how Feister could fit within the defense moving forward.
“They said they’d be needing a ’27 guy who can come in and make an immediate impact,” he said.
That message aligned directly with what Feister is looking for in a program.
“I want to come in and fight for a starting job as a freshman,” he said. “So it sits well.”
Feister also spent time with Freeman, a relationship that carries added familiarity beyond recruiting.
“We’ve known Coach Freeman for a while,” he said. “Me and his son go way back, we used to wrestle at nationals all the time.”
Freeman’s pitch also extended beyond football, touching on the broader fit between Feister’s background and what Notre Dame offers. That message resonated with the Archbishop Hoban High School standout.
“I am at a Catholic school, so I understand the tradition and the academic piece of it,” Feister said. “He explained that those similarities wouldn't be too different going from where I am to where they are. So that was big.”
That connection has helped build trust early in the process.
“It shows he’s not going to beat around the bush,” Feister said. “I can take his word. It helps with credibility a lot.”
With no official visits set yet, Feister is continuing to work through a busy spring schedule that includes upcoming trips to Ole Miss and Auburn as well a major evaluation period in mid-May, when programs like LSU, Texas, Alabama, Clemson, Tennessee, Miami and Florida are expected to see him in person.
Many of those schools are expected to offer, and if they do, he could schedule additional unofficials before finalizing his official visit slate.
For now, Notre Dame has positioned itself well enough to remain firmly in the mix as Feister evaluates his options.
“Right now, I’d say it’s a good chance,” he said of a potential official visit to South Bend.
