Notre Dame defensive backs coach Todd Lyght was in Colorado last week, and Mullen High School was one of his many stops. Lyght was there to check on 2018 linebacker Adrian Jackson (Oregon commit) and 2018 offensive lineman Florian McCann III.
The 6-foot-5, 275-pounder didn’t get to see Lyght, but McCann knows plenty about the Notre Dame program.
“I don’t have any connections to Notre Dame, but I am an Irish Catholic, and I have always been a fan since I was a little boy,” McCann told Irish Sports Daily. “I have always wanted to play for Notre Dame and been interested in the school.
“It’s my dream, so getting recruited by Notre Dame would mean the world to me. “
The Denver native doesn’t hold an offer just yet, but the in-state schools are showing plenty of interest.
“The whole recruiting process has been really interesting and exciting for me,” explained McCann. “I don’t have any offers right now, but I have Colorado, Colorado State, Montana, and Wyoming too. I talked to a couple of school too. Purdue stopped by, but it’s mainly the local schools.
“I went to Junior Day at Colorado, Colorado State, and I went to Wyoming. I watched a spring practice and stuff like that at Wyoming.”
While McCann has done his due diligence in visiting programs, he has yet to find a glaring weakness in any school. McCann has been impressed from top to bottom by the schools he has recently visited.
“My dad and I talked about it, and any Division-I school gives you everything,” McCann said. “Football is huge to me. The coaches I liked, and the coaches are great anywhere you go. We liked everything about all the schools, and there isn’t anything bad to say.”
McCann has paid close attention to the football aspect of his visits, but he is also making sure he is informed about the academic side. The Mullen standout already has a major and possible career in mind.
“Most schools have a major in Kinesiology, and that’s what I want to study,” he explained. “I want to play football for as long as possible and then train kids afterward whether it’s coaching or training. I want to know the movement of the body.”
On the field, McCann believes he can finesse opponents with his feet and is working hard in the weight room this spring to improve his strength.
“I’d say my biggest strength is my footwork,” said McCann. “I am 6-foot-5, 275 pounds and I run a 4.9 40. I felt like it was a big strength of mine last year. This offseason, I know I need to get stronger.”
