Cameron Wagner will be busy over the next few months.
In addition to focusing on his junior season with St. Joseph-Ogden High School, the 2027 Illinois offensive lineman will be making gameday visits to seven colleges.
Wagner will check out Ohio State (Aug. 30th), Oklahoma (Sept. 6th), Notre Dame (Sept. 13th), Penn State (Sept. 27th), Florida (Oct. 4th), Illinois (Oct. 11th) and Auburn (Oct. 18th).
“Just the schools that I liked the best that I visited so far, and what schools I think I had the best relationship with and what schools I thought were best for me and my family,” Wagner said of how he decided where to go this fall.
The 6-foot-6, 300-pounder has offers from most of the schools, including Notre Dame. The trips could help him trim down his list even further.
“See if I can see myself playing in those stadiums and if I can envision myself one day playing on those fields and if not, then that school is just not for me,” he said.
So far, he’s been impressed with the Irish, especially offensive line coach Joe Rudolph, assistant offensive line coach Rob Delaney, head coach Marcus Freeman and Director of Recruiting Carter Auman.
“I just have a great relationship with Coach Rudolph, Coach Rob, Coach Freeman, all those guys are just great guys, Carter,” he said. “Just great dudes and I just feel like I could definitely see myself playing there.”
He’s visited South Bend multiple times already this year and is looking forward to returning for the Irish’s home opener.
“I'm excited to see the environment,” he said. “I'm going to the Texas A&M game. They beat them last year at Texas A&M, so it should be getting pretty rowdy there, so I'm excited for that.”
He plans to cut his list again before taking spring visits next year and expects to make a final decision shortly after his official visits next summer.
He knows what he’ll be looking at most when it comes time to choose.
“The basic answer is a relationship with coaches. Everybody says that, but for me, I want to be able to play football for as long as possible, obviously. So NFL development and say I have a good NFL career play and play until I'm about 32 years old and then after that, life after football, a school that is going to be able to develop me into a great man and a football player.”
