Young Excited for June Arrival

Michael Young made a tough decision to head to South Bend for college months ago, and the 2017 receiver is just a few short weeks from the reality of becoming a football player for Notre Dame.

The 2017 receiver has been working hard over the last few months, and he has been getting some great advice from those who have been in his shoes.

“I am working out with a guy named Derrick Joseph, and a couple of guys headed to the next level too,” Young told Irish Sports Daily. “During the spring, I got to work with a couple of NFL guys, and it’s been a great place to get some work in.

“Derrick’s brother is Terry Joseph, the defensive backs coach for North Carolina, and his cousin is Vance Joseph, who coaches from the Broncos. It’s crazy, but I have been working with him for a while now.”

Young made sure to pick the brains of the NFL guys to know more about the college experience and what to expect when he arrives in South Bend.

“Talking with the NFL guys was great,” Young stated. “They have been there and done that. They have been where I am trying to get, and it was a great experience.”

The Destrehan star has been working on all parts of his game, and that includes conditioning.

“I can improve on everything as a receiver,” explained Young. “There isn’t one thing I can single out from high school. I control my conditioning, and I am in great shape right now. I’m probably in the best shape I’ve ever been in, but you can never be too conditioned.

“I am working on my hand-eye coordination and my speed. I have gotten way faster, which is amazing. I have gained weight, but it isn’t the bad weight. I am just working on everything.”

In addition to the good weight, Young also was surprised to find out he had grown taller over the last few months.

“I have actually grown some,” laughed Young. “It’s very, very strange. I was a solid 5-foot-10, but now I am 5-foot-11 and 182 pounds right now.”

The Louisiana native wasn’t able to make the Blue-Gold Game in April, as he and his family were on a cruise, but he has kept in contact with his classmates and has heard great things from the early enrollees.

“We are all in a group chat, and the guys have been asking them how things are going at Notre Dame,” said Young. “CJ (Holmes), Aaron (Banks), Brock (Wright), Rob (Hainsey), and Isaiah (Robertson) have said things have been going well. The weight program and the training have been intense, but they see the results.

“They always talk about the practices. They like the practices, and everyone is working hard, but everyone is having a blast too. They have been giving us feedback, and it makes it even more exciting to get started.”

Young has also been getting a small taste of the Matt Balis workout program. The four-star prospect has been going through his training program and Balis’ program over the last few months.

“They gave me the workout plan, and I incorporate Notre Dame’s workout when I go train, so I get the best of both worlds,” Young stated. “Coach (Autry) Denson and Coach (Del) Alexander came down last week, and they told me about getting my Ipad and getting the playbook when I get there.”

Notre Dame is in the final days of class, which means Young’s recruiting class is getting very close reporting in mid-June. Young admits he has thought a lot about starting college and he’s more than excited.

“It has set in,” stated Young. “Leaving for school doesn’t bother me as much. The more I think about it, the more anxious I get. A lot of guys from the area don’t go as far as I am going. I am ready to get out, and I want to fast forward to June 17th.”

Young knows it’s going to be hard to leave his family and friends next month, but he knows they will be keeping tabs on him. However, the biggest adjustment might be getting used to the new menu in South Bend.

“I am going to miss my family and the relationships I have built here,” said Young. “I’ll miss the relationships with guys I have made since I was little. I will truly miss the community, but I know they are going to follow me and when I get to come back, it will be even better.

“I will miss the cooking. Man, you can’t believe the cooking down here. It’s ridiculous.

“But man, I am ready.”
