Notre Dame has been looking to get more physical, but also athletic on defense. On Sunday, the Irish offered 2018 defensive end/linebacker Bo Calvert and his brother, 2019 athlete Joshua Calvert.
Joshua was fired up to hear he got an offer from Notre Dame, as the Irish are a program he has watched throughout his life.
“Bo was talking with Notre Dame, and they told him we both had offers,” Calvert told Irish Sports Daily. “He came home and told me about the offer. I was stoked.
“Notre Dame has a rich history, and they play in big-time games. I have watched them growing up, and it’s always been a dream to have an opportunity to play there. Getting the chance to play there is a crazy to me.”
Calvert is listed as an athlete on most recruiting boards right now as he plays quarterback, receiver, linebacker, and safety for Oak Christian (Calif.).
“BYU and Utah offered me as an athlete,” stated Calvert. “I could end up being a quarterback or strong safety for them.”
The 6-foot-3, 205-pounder figured to be the backup quarterback heading into 2017, but 2018 five-star USC commit Matt Corral transferred out, and Calvert finds himself juggling two sports this spring.
“I am in baseball right now, but I have been communicating with the coaches about quarterback,” Calvert said. “We’ve been figuring out what is going to happen this season. I will play quarterback, and we will probably bring in the second-string quarterback a few times so I can play receiver, I will stay on defense too.”
Defense is where Calvert is clearly the most comfortable on his film. The four-star prospect clearly loves the physical part of the game and has a great combination of size and speed to attack the ball carrier.
“I played strong safety, and I dropped down into the box for the majority of the time, so it was like playing outside linebacker,” explained Calvert. “I enjoyed playing there because I can come up and hit. I am comfortable staying back deep and reading the quarterback too.
“I love to hit. I love to run up and be able to lay out the guy with the ball. That’s the best feeling.”
While his brother has been committed for over a year to USC, Calvert says the option of playing together has crossed their minds, but they are also open to going to different schools.
“We have always thought about it, and if an option came up where we both believed the school was right for us, then it’d be pretty cool,” stated Calvert. “We are also open to playing at different schools for our own experience if that was the best fit. Playing together would be a cool experience to have.”
Could Notre Dame end up being the spot both players play at? It’s an option, and the Calvert brothers could visit South Bend this summer.
“Bo and I were hoping we could have a chance to go out to Notre Dame and check the school out this summer,” said Calvert.
