Before they joined the Big 12 in 2012, Gary Patterson and TCU were the big fish in the small pond in what was then considered the non-BCS conferences. It was the Horned Frogs, Utah, and Boise State that were at a different level than their peers and they all deserved a place at the table.

That spot never opened up for Boise State, but it did for Utah (joined the Pac-10 with Colorado to make it the Pac-12) and also for TCU.
