Notre Dame used Lathan Whisenton’s visit this past weekend to push for a spot in an already crowded official visit schedule.
The 2027 Texas running back made his way to South Bend for Junior Day as the Irish look to work their way into the next phase of his recruitment.
The 6-foot, 200-pounder worked through position meetings, team meetings and spent time with head coach Marcus Freeman, running backs coach Ja’Juan Seider and offensive coordinator Mike Denbrock during the visit.
Those meetings gave him a closer look at how the offense operates and how he could fit within it.
“They’re trying to get running backs into open space,” Whisenton told Irish Sports Daily. “From there, it's all up to what you can do.”
He also enjoyed seeing the Irish get after it on the practice field.
“It was a good practice,” he said. “Just a good, consistent practice.”
He got a chance to evaluate Seider’s coaching style during meetings and position work as well.
“I’d say he's deep,” Whisenton said. “He knows a lot of ball and I find it interesting.”
The visit also allowed him to get a feel for the overall environment, including how he fits with the players and other recruits on campus.
“They’re cool,” he said. “They’re chill. Just from a person, character-wise, they all seem like cool people.”
The Waco native holds offers from Notre Dame, Florida, Texas Tech, Baylor, SMU and LSU among others.
The Midway High School star has already locked in five official visits and is set to visit Texas Tech next as he continues working through his spring schedule.
With a full spring schedule ahead and multiple official visits already in place, Notre Dame’s focus will be on finding a way to get him back on campus for one of those dates.
“Still not sure yet,” Whisenton said of scheduling an official visit back to Notre Dame. “Talking about it with my parents and seeing where it goes from here.”
Whisenton’s next steps will play out over the coming weeks as he continues evaluating whether the Irish can move into that group.
