2027 Texas DB Karnell James Enjoys Notre Dame Visit, Sets Official
Karnell James’ first visit to Notre Dame this weekend opened his eyes to the opportunities available in South Bend, which led him to locking in an official visit while still on campus.
The 2027 Texas safety, who is currently committed to Texas, made the trip to campus and left with a much clearer understanding of how he could fit within the program.
Marcus Freeman delivered that message early and directly.
“He talked about my ability to play here and contribute early,” James said. “They’re low on guys and I can go out there and play right now. So that’s awesome to hear.”
The 6-foot-1, 170-pounder came away impressed not only with the opportunity, but also with Freeman’s personality and presence.
“He’s really cool,” James said. “You see him as somebody who is famous, but when you meet him, you don’t really think he’s a head coach. He’s kind of like a father figure and somebody you can talk to. He’s a cool guy.”
The Manvel High School standout also spent significant time with defensive backs coach Aaron Henry, who broke down development in a way that stood out.
“I had a meeting with him and he really showed me what they do and how they do it,” James said. “The guys he’s developed, like Devon Witherspoon and Kerby Joseph, and the drills they have them doing at practice and how it translates to the game.”
That level of detail helped paint a clearer picture of how James could be used and developed at Notre Dame.
He also got a chance to spend time around players, which added another layer to the visit.
“They’re really cool,” James said. “They’ve got players from all over the country, from Texas to Florida to everywhere, and I got to hang out with them and hear about their experiences.”
That interaction reinforced his belief that he could fit within the program on the field and off.
Notre Dame offered James earlier this month and made it clear his commitment to the Longhorns would not impact how hard the staff plans to recruit him.
That approach, combined with what he saw on campus, led him to quickly schedule a return trip.
“Next step is official visit,” James said, noting he’ll take his official to South Bend June 11th.
James will also take official visits to LSU and Texas as he continues to evaluate his options.
“I’m not really closing anything off this early,” James said. “Depending on how it goes.”
But after seeing Notre Dame up close for the first time, the opportunity left a strong impression.
“I like it a lot. It’s definitely somewhere I believe I can play and contribute early.”
