Marshaun Thornton’s latest visit to Notre Dame wasn’t just about football.

During his second trip to South Bend earlier this month, the 2028 Chicago wide receiver gained a deeper understanding of what the program offers off the field.

The Mount Carmel standout got a chance to see Notre Dame in a different setting after having attended a game last Fall. This time, the focus shifted toward practice, meetings and time with the staff, including head coach Marcus Freeman and wide receivers coach Mike Brown.

“Everything was good,” Thornton said. “Just being on campus, seeing a tour, practice was good. Talked to Coach Freeman, talked to Coach Brown.”

The 6-foot-2, 180-pounder spent time with Brown breaking down how he could fit into the Irish scheme.

“Just going over how he could use me in the offense, how we break down defenses,” Thornton said. “What he liked about me, what he thinks I needed to work on and just little things like that.”

That vision centered on maximizing his God-given abilities while continuing to refine his game.

“Just using my natural skill, just going up there, making plays, just being the best version of me,” he said. “He wants me to work more so I can get more into my craft and it’ll just come very easy to me.”

Seeing practice up close only added to that confidence.

“Our high school kind of operates the same way,” Thornton said. “It’s not hard to see myself there. Practice was intense, it was live, everybody was getting after it. From a receiver standpoint, it was good. They were destroying DBs.”

The visit also included time with Freeman, where the conversation extended beyond football.

“The talk with Coach Freeman, it was basically just life,” Thornton said. “It was about the degree at Notre Dame and how that can take you a long way. The degree was the biggest thing that he touched on. We didn’t touch on football as much.”

Thornton left feeling good about the people who are leading the program.

“My impression is they’re down-to-earth guys, just great people,” Thornton said. “Always good being around them.”

Thornton is already looking ahead to his return trip to campus.

“The next step is getting back down there,” he said. “Just keep building the relationship with them.”

That next visit could come as soon as this summer or during the fall for a game day visit.

“Probably get down there for a game day. If not, I’ll probably come down there in the summer. It all depends on my schedule.”
