Coach: Notre Dame DL Commit Aidan O'Neil Is "The Full Package"
There’s a reason Aidan O’Neil’s recruitment took off the way it did.
And it starts with what he’s still becoming.
At Don Bosco Prep, the 2027 New Jersey defensive end developed into one of the more intriguing prospects in the country, not because of early hype, but because of steady, deliberate growth.
“He’s the full package in so many ways,” Don Bosco Prep head coach Dan Sabella told Irish Sports Daily.
“He’s obviously got tremendous length, plays with really low pad level, great leverage and really takes pride in never being satisfied.”
That mindset has defined the 6-foot-5, 250-pounder’s rise.
Unlike many high-profile prospects, he didn’t arrive with a national reputation or a long list of camp accolades. His development came over time, through consistent work and attention to detail.
“He wasn’t one of those guys who was a superstar youth football player,” Sabella said. “He was a kid from Orange County, New York who played for his little hometown teams and was pretty wet behind the ears when he showed up here, but he just made tremendous growth each and every year.”
That trajectory is part of what gives O’Neil such a high ceiling.
As he heads to Notre Dame, where he committed on Friday, Sabella believes his best football is still ahead of him, particularly as he continues to refine the details of his game.
“I think overall, just continuing to master his craft, use of his hands and learning how to set up moves,” Sabella said. “Just being an overall student of the game.”
That combination of growth and projection is what makes him such a valuable addition.
He has the frame to continue adding weight if needed. Sabella doesn’t know O’Neil’s body fat off the top of his head, but said, “he's basically got abs, so there's definitely weight to be added if need be.”
O’Neil also has the athleticism to remain on the edge and impact the game as a pass rusher.
“That’s why I think he’s gotten all the attention he’s got,” Sabella said. “He has such a high ceiling because he can definitely put more weight on, but he’s pretty twitchy. Him on the edge, matched up against some of these big offensive tackles, he’s going to have the ability to be really effective.”
That versatility gives Notre Dame options.
Whether he stays outside or eventually moves inside, the expectation is the same, continued development and a player who is still ascending.
Notre Dame fans would love for this to be the start of a pipeline with Don Bosco Prep, a perennial national power, and so would Sabella.
“I sure hope so,” the coach said. “I can tell you we're super excited and proud to have him attending the great institution of Notre Dame. It's been a little while since we've sent a kid there.
“Even a lot of our Salesian leadership here is already excited. There's a little bit of buzz even amongst a lot of the clergy and the people involved in the school who are really fired up.”
And if O’Neil’s path is any indication, the Irish look to be getting a player whose trajectory is far from finished.
