Notre Dame Sets High Bar for 2029 QB Logan Lucero After First Visit
2029 Parish Episcopal (Texas) quarterback Logan Lucero was familiar with Notre Dame, but last week was the first time he set foot on campus.
It didn’t disappoint.
“It was more than I expected and I expected a lot,” Lucero stated. “It was beautiful. It’s hard to say that when you come here, you don’t get closer to God and closer to religion.”
The Texas native loved the football experience, but Lucero was able to feel and see a much deeper aspect of the school.
“There’s so much history,” explained Lucero. You walk and see the lakes. There’s so much peace. I feel like when I’m not in the football facility, I can go sit on a bench overlooking the lake and find peace. I’m all about trying to stay calm, cool and collected.
“There are only 9,000 students, so even during school, I’ve heard it’s just so peaceful just to be around campus and there’s the Basilica and things like that. It’s crazy to think about.”
Notre Dame also rolled out the red carpet for the 6-foot-2, 215-pounder on the visit and meeting Marcus Freeman was a priority for both sides.
“I first started with Coach Freeman,” stated Lucero. “He’s everything as advertised and then some. He’s as real as it gets. He’s just a great person. He’s a great human. He really cares for you and you can tell he cares for you.”
Lucero then spent time with Notre Dame offensive coordinator Mike Denbrock, who had the full attention of the Parish Episcopal star.
“Coach Denbrock, just his history in coaching is crazy,” said Lucero. “From being able to coach Jayden Daniels and stuff like that. As a quarterback, that speaks volumes because you don’t get guys like that all the time.”
Irish quarterbacks coach Gino Guidugli had already worked hard to build a relationship with Lucero after extending an offer in May and that connection only strengthened during the visit.
“Coach Gino, I feel like we’re as close as we can be right now,” Lucero stated. “He’s a great coach. He’s real. He’s everything I could ask for. He’s a great person.”
Lucero also got a glimpse into how he could fit within Notre Dame's offense.
“I got a little hint of what the offense is,” Lucero said. “He incorporated my film into it and how my film coincides with Notre Dame’s offense. That was cool to witness and just see if I come here, there’s a lot of familiar stuff. Not everything would be foreign to me, which is huge.”
It’s clear that the visit set a bar for Lucero, but that doesn’t mean the whole day went well.
Notre Dame split recruits into groups for a grilling competition, which was well outside of Lucero's comfort zone.
“Oh my gosh, no,” Lucero said when asked if he had grilled before. “I walked in not expecting to do that. I think we had a little help from our chef over there. I’m pretty sure he made our plate for us, so yeah, we might have cheated a little bit on that one. Apparently, nobody can cook. My mom would have been distraught at my cooking abilities.”
Still, Lucero understood the bigger purpose behind the competition.
“That’s bonding,” explained Lucero. “As a young kid, it was one of the first times I’ve been around sophomores and juniors. It’s cool just to be able to interact with them.”
As for his summer schedule, Lucero is playing it by ear, as his focus is on his high school program. And it might also be telling that getting to Notre Dame to camp was a significant priority.
“I’m kind of planning it by ear every week,” said Lucero. My goal right now is to win another State Championship for Parish Episcopal. I want to help do that. We have a great team coming in and back. I’m super excited about that. There’s no reason why we shouldn’t be able to compete for another one. We have to keep our heads down and keep working.”
