Notre Dame spent a good portion of Roman Igwebuike’s recruitment trying to make up ground with the 2027 Illinois linebacker.

On Saturday, the Irish capped the comeback, landing a commitment from the Chicago linebacker following an official visit ultimately changed the trajectory of the race last month.

Igwebuike becomes Notre Dame's 22nd commitment in the Class of 2027 and its linebacker for now, helping to begin filling the biggest remaining need on the Irish's recruiting board.

The 6-foot-3, 222-pound Mount Carmel standout chose Notre Dame over finalists Clemson, Indiana, Missouri and Tennessee among others.

The recruitment didn't always appear headed in Notre Dame's direction.

Earlier this spring, it felt as though the Irish were playing catch-up after linebacker recruiting took an unexpected turn. Notre Dame had yet to secure a commitment at the position and eventually parted ways with Amarri Irvin, making Igwebuike an increasingly important target as the process unfolded.

By the beginning of June, the Irish had shifted from maintaining solid contact to going on a full-court press.

That urgency came at the right time.

Igwebuike arrived in South Bend for his June official visit following trips to Indiana, Clemson and Missouri. At that point, confidence varied from school to school, largely because the Chicago native had given very little indication where he was leaning.

Notre Dame needed to make its best impression and did exactly that.

Following the visit, momentum quickly shifted toward Notre Dame with Igwebuike ultimately cancelling a scheduled official visit to Tennessee, a significant development considering the Volunteers had remained firmly in the mix throughout the process.

By the time the calendar flipped to July, the Irish had quietly emerged as the team to beat.

The commitment gives Notre Dame a versatile linebacker with an outstanding combination of size and athleticism. Igwebuike owns verified measurements of 6-foot-3 and 222 pounds with a 79-inch wingspan, a 4.27 shuttle, a 31.2-inch vertical jump and a 9-foot-2½ broad jump.

Perhaps most importantly, it gives the Irish a desperately needed linebacker, which they had been searching for all the spring.

With Igwebuike’s decision made, there is only one current member of our ISD Target List who has yet to commit, Chicago defensive tackle Brayden Parks‍, who is expected to decide between the Irish and Oregon at some point this summer, although the board will surely expand a bit in the fall.
