2019 Indy LB Gets Look At Rover At Invasion

William Chapman got his opportunity to display his skills in-front of the Notre Dame coaching staff. Following the camp, Irish Sports Daily’s Christian McCollum was able to catch up with the 2019 Indiana linebacker for his impressions of the camp.
“I just like the school,” explained Chapman. “I like the environment. It was great!”
The Irish coaching staff has a jam-packed schedule set up for the recruits this weekend and Chapman was singled out to work at a specific position during the event.
“I was with all the linebackers,” described Chapman. “Then they broke it off. I don't know if you know, but Shayne Simon works the Rover spot. So, that was really cool getting to learn that and see how that is done up here.”
The Rover position is new to the Notre Dame defense as new defensive coordinator Mike Elko continues to implement it into the Irish scheme. Chapman was able to provide some detail of what the Rover position entails.
“It’s a linebacker hybrid,” stated Chapman. “You play in space. You are all over the field. That’s what I like most about it, you get to play in a lot of space.”
Out of the campers, Chapman was one of only a few to work out at the spot with Clark Lea and Chapman was the only one in his 2019 class there.
With his time primarily spent with Lea, Chapman was able to explain some of the feedback he got from the new Irish position coach.
“He said my drops were nice,” said Chapman. “Which is good at the Rover spot.”
The 6-foot, 205-pound Chapman had some positive feedback about the new Irish’s new defensive assistants.
“I liked it a lot,” said Chapman. “I like Coach Lea and Coach Elko a lot because it’s really get down to business, be aggressive and get downhill, but also be controlled. It is a lot about being fast and being physical and be in control with that. You cannot be out of control while playing.”
In terms of what is next between Chapman and Notre Dame, it seems like an early connection has been formed.
“I hope to get back up in the fall,” stated Chapman. “Get to see all the facilities and stuff. I can talk to the coaches a little more and see where we are at. I know Coach (Mike) Elston and I still have to talk about my film this year and some stuff I have to work on. I hope to have an amazing senior year, get back up in the fall, and get an offer from this amazing University. I love this establishment!”
