2018 Spring Hill (Tenn.) running back Dontae Smith will make the trip to South Bend this weekend and hopes to turn running back coach Autry Denson’s head with his speed.
“I am very excited to get to Notre Dame for camp,” Smith told Irish Sports Daily. “My trainer said Notre Dame told him they needed two running backs and were looking for a fast one, so we’re coming up for camp. I hope something good comes of it.”
The 5-foot-9, 180-pounder has already turned heads at The Opening Regionals in Atlanta and Cleveland this spring. The three-star prospect ran a 4.51 40-yard dash and recorded a 36.3-inch vertical jump in Atlanta.
“I can do a lot of stuff,” stated Smith. “I can run the ball, play slot, and I can catch out of the backfield.”
Programs like Memphis, Syracuse, and Temple have noticed Smith’s ability to play various roles, and the Columbia native has been offered at multiple positions.
“It’s a mixture right now,” said Smith of where teams were offering him. “Most schools are recruiting me as a running back.”
Memphis is only about three hours away from Smith, and the Tigers have made it known they want the Spring Hill star.
“Memphis and Temple are recruiting me hard,” explained Smith. “I hear from Memphis the most.
“They are an in-state program, and I talk to the lineman coach all the time. He is always asking me to visit, but it’s been hard to get there. He has been telling me I would play running back and I can carry the ball a lot.”
Smith has continued to work on the little things this offseason and hopes that can impress Denson and other coaches this summer.
“I have been working on cutting and using my speed to get up field faster,” Smith said. “I am always working on my speed too.
“Every camp I have done, I felt like I have been one of the top guys there. It gives me confidence and more relaxed.”
Smith hasn’t set his summer schedule just yet but knows he will be at South Carolina soon for a camp.
“Georgia Tech, Illinois, South Carolina, and Wake Forest could offer soon,” said Smith. “South Carolina has been talking to me a lot, and Illinois wants me to come camp.”
