2018 Mullen (Colo.) offensive lineman Florian McCann III had always wanted to visit Notre Dame growing up, and he finally got his chance this weekend. The 6-foot-4, 275-pounder made the trip to South Bend for the Lineman’s Challenge and felt like he performed well on Saturday.

“It was awesome,” McCann told Irish Sports Daily. “I enjoyed the trip to South Bend.

“The camp started at noon, and we ran through some drills. Towards the end of the first session, we did some 1-on-1s, and I felt I did really well.”

During the break, the three-star prospect learned he was moving up to be coached by former Notre Dame great, Zack Martin.

“We had a 45-minute break and came back for the second session,” explained McCann. “I was moved up to Zack Martin’s group, and it was awesome to work with him. I learned a lot from him and felt like I improved a lot from the camp. We did about 30 minutes of 1-on-1s to end the camp.

“I wasn’t expecting to work with Zack at all. A graduate assistant came over and was talking to my dad and me during the break. He told us about who the coaches were and then said something about Zack Martin and the Dallas Cowboys.

“I was blessed to have the opportunity and took advantage of it. It was just a great experience.”

McCann was fresh off an MVP performance at the All-Poly camp and felt the competition was good at Notre Dame, but it wasn’t overwhelming.

“It wasn’t anything I couldn’t handle,” McCann stated. “I definitely performed well in my opinion. It was different than other camps. It was definitely a Notre Dame camp, and there was some good competition there.”

The Colorado native got instruction from offensive line coach Harry Hiestand, and McCann was quick to show his appreciation for the chance to work with him.

“I spoke a little bit with Coach Hiestand,” McCann said. “We talked a little bit during 1-on-1s. He was able to instruct me where to put my hands and to keep my head up. At the end, I went over and shook his hand to thank him for the camp.”

All in all, the trip to South Bend was a major highlight for McCann and his family as they made sure to take a stroll around campus before departing.

“It was more than I expected,” said McCann. “I have seen all the pictures and videos, but I hadn’t seen it in person.

"At the end of the camp, my dad, brother, and I walked all the way to The Golden Dome and took pictures. It was awesome. It was what I had wanted to do since I was a little kid.”
