2019 Naples (Fla.) running back Chez Mellusi had been hoping for a Notre Dame offer since running backs coach Autry Denson stopped by his school during the Spring Evaluation Period.
On Thursday, the 6-foot-1, 200-pounder got word to call Denson and got some good news.
“I called coach Denson today and picked up the offer, Mellusi told Irish Sports Daily. “He talked a lot about Notre Dame and how the recruiting process works for them.
“To be honest, when my head coach told me to call him, and I was already excited. When he offered, I was already ecstatic because Notre Dame had been one of my favorites for a while.”
As a 2019 prospect, the NCAA limits contact until September and Mellusi expects to start building a relationship with Denson when the time comes.
“Once September 1st hits, he said he would be texting me a lot more, and we are going to build a stronger relationship,” stated Mellusi.
Mellusi holds offers from Arizona, Boston College, Kentucky, Miami, Michigan, North Carolina, Ole Miss, and Virginia, but he hasn’t dug too deep into the recruiting process just yet.
“I didn’t take any visits this spring or summer,” explained Mellusi. “I don’t think I am going to take any visits this summer because our season starts early this year. I will be definitely taking visits after this season.”
The Florida native has put an emphasis on preparing for his junior season over visits, and he’s hoping to have a big 2017.
“I have been focusing on getting my lower body a lot bigger,” Mellusi said. “I have gained weight, and I am transitioning to doing more on the football field. I play receiver, but I am trying to do more to help my team out.
“My versatility is a strength. I can line up pretty much anywhere my coach asks me to go. If he wants to play quarterback or whatever, I can pretty much do it.”
When it comes to picking a school, Mellusi isn’t worried about scheme as he knows he will fit into any offense and distance won’t play a factor because he isn’t originally from Florida.
Education is at the top of his list, and Mellusi knows Notre Dame can offer a significant degree.
“Academics are important to my dad and me,” said Mellusi. “When Notre Dame offered – that’s why they were one of my favorites from the jump. Notre Dame is such a prestigious college. It’s not just the football aspect. It’s a life thing because I can go on and it will help me down the road.”
