Farrell Focused on Chemistry

Notre Dame point guard Matt Farrell was just stepping into his leadership role at this time last summer. It’s no secret the New Jersey native is the heart and soul of the Irish and the 6-foot-1, 178-pounder is focused on a deep March run.

“We want to keep winning,” stated Farrell. “We want to win games here and keep building the culture. In my three years, we have done a lot of winning. Last year, we felt we could have made a run, but we left it short.

“We are trying to make a deep run with us seniors having one more year.”

The road to March started last month with summer workouts and practice. Farrell is a firm believer the work the team puts in now will show itself in the winter.

“We take the summer very seriously,” explained Farrell. “We want to build the chemistry right away with the new guys. When they come in, we have guys instantly teaching and showing them the ropes.

“These practices and workouts are critical to developing that chemistry and mindset of wanting to play for other guys.”

With key losses to Steve Vasturia and VJ Beachem, freshman DJ Harvey becomes a vital part of the rotation. Farrell has liked what he has seen from the D.C. native and feels Harvey has bought into the process.

“He’s been awesome,” Farrell stated. “He is asking questions and asking the right questions. Juwan (Durham) has been awesome too. It’s just our culture that the new guys are really excited. We’re excited to have them.”

Farrell averaged 14.1 points and 5.6 assists per game last season and hopes to see those numbers go up. However, making sure chemistry is developed among his teammates is goal number one.

“We are trying to do the same things,” said Farrell. “Bonzie (Colson), (Austin) Torres and I are trying to lead. We are trying to lead on and off the court. It’s the same summer stuff, and we take pride in the summer.

“It’s more individual stuff. It’s about working on your craft and game. The practices and team stuff are to build chemistry.”
