Michael Young Shows Up Big Against LSU
Freshman receiver Michael Young had been patient all year for his moment, and it came against LSU on Monday afternoon. The Louisiana native caught a touchdown in the fourth quarter to help tie the score at 14 and give the Irish some much-needed momentum.
“It was great to get the opportunity to showcase what I can do,” stated Young. “Hats off to the coaching staff for believing in me and helping us get the job done.”
Young might not have the experience of some of the roster, but his preparation and maturity showed on his six-yard score.
“I saw the outside linebacker reading me and (Ian) Book,” recalled Young. “He was checking back looking for me, and I knew he had to decide because Ian was rolling out. I slipped behind him and Ian was able to find me.”
With losses of receivers Kevin Stepherson and Chase Claypool, the 5-foot-11, 190-pounder knew he had to step up.
“Next man in,” stated Young. “I’ve been watching those guys and they have shown me how to go to practice each day. It was about giving my all and showing the coaches that we have a couple of guys that can step up.”
When he scored, Young didn’t have time to celebrate as he was focused on getting another.
“At that time, it was 14-14 and the only thing on my mind was about getting the next one,” Young stated. “The next one is the most important one.”
The win will be one Young can be proud of when he returns to Destrehan (La.) after the bowl as he knew several members of the LSU team.
“I knew quite a few,” laughed Young. “During the game, they would say ‘What’s up’ in passing, but I was locked in.”
“Any win is satisfying. Even though it was LSU, it didn’t make a difference. I wanted to put my team in a good position to win.”
