This summer, Chris Mayo‍ will get a chance to do something he’s wanted to do for a long time when the 2020 New Jersey offensive lineman makes it to Notre Dame’s camp in June.

“I planned on going last summer, but I transferred to a new school, so I had to go through preseason and stuff,” Mayo explained.

“I always wanted to go to the offensive line camp. I got invited two weeks ago and I registered immediately.”

The Peddie School standout’s affection for Notre Dame goes back a while and he’s excited for his chance to compete at the camp.

“Since I was little, I always loved Notre Dame with the good helmets, the history and the campus,” he said. “Just to perform in front of the coaches, I just want them to see what I’ve got. It’ll mean a lot to me to just practice and play in front of them.”

Mayo believes he’ll be able to show the Irish staff what has helped him land early scholarship offers from Rutgers, Syracuse, Maryland, Virginia, Tennessee and UCLA.

“I’m light on my feet for my size,” he explained. “I’m 6-6 and weigh 295 pounds, but I’m pretty quick for my size and can play pretty much all positions on the offensive line. I just want them to see how versatile and how athletic I am.”

The Richland, N.J., native was in South Bend for the Irish’s win over Miami back in 2016 and was blown away by the trip.

“It was better than I expected it to be because of the atmosphere, the fan base and the history and tradition behind Notre Dame,” he said. “Everything I thought Notre Dame was going to be, that’s what it lived up to be.”

Mayo is grateful for all of the offers and attention he’s already received.

“It’s honestly a blessing,” he said. “I’m truly blessed to have the opportunities with these programs looking at who I am as a player and as a person. Sometimes it’s overwhelming, but it’s honestly just a blessing.”

In addition to the trip to South Bend, he has a few other trips on the itinerary.

“Summertime, I know I’m going down to Fort Lauderdale to visit the University of Miami just because I’m going there for vacation and they want me to go to the camp,” he said. “I’m going to the Virginia Tech spring game on April 21st and the week following, I’m going to Penn State for their spring game. I also might be possibly going to a spring practice at Boston College this Saturday.”

It’s still early, but Mayo has a good idea of what he’s looking for in a college.

“For me, it’s a mixture of things. It’s academics, coaching staff. I want a good balance between school and football. I don’t want anything to lean too heavily to either side.”
