New Notre Dame safeties coach Terry Joseph recently touched base with Tyrone Lewis Jr.‍  One of the questions Joseph asked the 2019 Louisiana defensive back was whether he’d be interested in Notre Dame.

And the answer was a clear yes.

The 6-foot, 180-pounder has heard plenty about the Irish from one of his coaches at Hammond High School, former Notre Dame cornerback Brock Williams.

“My coach was telling me it’s a good school and they treat people well and the players well,” Lewis explained. “He told me they had good academics and it could be somewhere that would be a good fit for me to go play corner.”

Lewis has early offers from schools like Ole Miss, Missouri, SMU, Western Kentucky, Tulane and Louisiana Tech among others.

“It’s amazing,” he said. “Not many people thought I would get this many scholarships. I had some people saying, ‘I know you can do it,’ while some others were saying, ‘You ain’t going to get that many offers. I don’t believe that.’”

After sending Joseph his highlights, Lewis was asked to get his transcripts, including his core GPA and his test scores up to South Bend. The Hammond, La., native said his counselors are getting that information together to be sent.

Lewis is looking forward to staying in touch with the Irish and potentially taking a trip to South Bend.

“I would like to go up there for a visit or a practice or anything,” he said. “That wouldn’t be a problem.

“I’d like to take a tour of the campus and the football facilities and the dorm rooms and stuff like that. I’d like to meet the coaches and build relationships with the coaches because that’s number one with my recruitment. I have to have a relationship with the coaches.”

Coaches have been impressed with his highlights, but others have been more impressed with him as a person, according to Lewis.

“The coaches I’ve met in person said they liked my personality,” he explained. “I went to La. Tech last weekend and he said he liked my personality and liked me more up close than on film because I’m a good person. He said he could tell I’m a leader as well.”

He’s also taken a recent visit to Tulane and has trips coming up to Memphis and Western Kentucky, but isn’t in a rush to commit.

“I’m going to take my time because I don’t want to make a quick decision,” he said.

Lewis wants to major in Business and said academics will play a role in his decision.

“Looking at the school, not just football.”
