Practice Report: 3/20

Notre Dame put on the pads for the first time this spring, but we didn’t see much contact in the short period of viewing on Tuesday morning.

The Irish did the typical stretching, tempo drills and then broke into positional work during the first few periods of practice.

The early enrollees were at practice this morning as they had to do an academics requirement on the first day of spring ball.

RB Jahmir Smith: Looks a little light in his lower body and will benefit from the extra time in the weight room. Moves as expected and has good feet.

WR Micah Jones: Jones towers over most of the receiver corps and looks like a defensive end to be honest. Great build and will only look more impressive once he gets further along in the weight program. Moves well, but could still use a little bit more agility.

TE George Takacs: Was on the bike and doing conditioning drills as he recovers from a knee injury.

LB Bo Bauer: Looks the college-ready from a physical standpoint. The key for him will be continuing to improve his athleticism and speed.

LB Jack Lamb: Very thin and will need to add weight, but his athleticism shines even in drill work.

LB Ovie Oghoufo: Pretty much the same as Lamb but a little longer of an athlete. His arms are extremely long, but he needs to add weight.

CB Houston Griffith: Was at the first practice and he looked the same today. He looks ready to go physically and moves around the field with confidence.

During the tempo drill, the offense looked like this:

The positional drills were the same as usual. The secondary was working on forcing turnovers, footwork, and coverages. The linebackers worked on footwork and sled drills, while the defensive line did the typical shedding block drills and technique work.

The defensive tackles were struggling with not jumping the snap and hand placement. Mike Elston got on them, and the group had to do their fair share of up-downs this morning.

On offense, the running backs worked on ball security and footwork, while the receivers worked on routes and blocking.

I did have my eyes on the quarterback, and Brandon Wimbush was accurate during the 15-minute viewing. He missed on a few deep passes but rebounded well and was on fire to end the practice viewing. It was against air, but he was hitting his marks with confidence. Ian Book looked good, but the zip on Wimbush’s ball stands out.

Notes
- Nic Weishar didn’t practice and was working on conditioning with Takacs.
- Josh Adams, Durham Smythe and Equanimeous St. Brown were at practice.
- Former Arizona State head coach Todd Graham was at practice as well.
- There is a sense of confidence coming from the team in the way they do drill work and conduct themselves this spring. It might have been the unknown of last year with two new coordinators, but this team is a confident one.
