Notre Dame assistant Chip Long was at Carrollton High School in Carrollton, Ga., earlier this month and left not one, but two offers for underclassmen in head coach Sean Calhoun’s program.

Long left an offer for 2020 linebacker Kevin Swint‍ and 2021 linebacker Chaz Chambliss‍.

“Obviously, they get football interest because of the film,” Carrollton said of both Swint and Chambliss.

Swint’s offer sheet is already elite and includes programs like Georgia, Alabama, LSU, Ohio State, Michigan, Florida, Miami, Tennessee and Wisconsin among others.

“The guy has been making plays since he stepped foot on our campus,” Calhoun said of Swint. “He went through spring practice with us as an eighth-grader before he was a rising ninth. He’s just a very good football player.”

Calhoun acknowledges Swint’s physical abilities are what catch the attention of college coaches, but that’s not all that keeps their focus.

“What’s really coming together and why people want him apart of their program is because of the kind of kid he is,” the coach said. “Not only is he one dynamic football player, but off the field, he’s twice the person, which is great.

“He’s a good student in the classroom. He’s made very good grades. He knows how to carry himself. He’s a kid of character and discipline. That’s why he’s going to go far.”

The 6-foot-3, 220-pounder understands he’ll need to succeed in both aspects to reach his potential.

“You got to a place like Notre Dame, you’re going to have to play football at the highest level, but you’re going to have to go to school,” Calhoun explained. “You’re going to have to be a very good student-athlete and hold yourself to the highest standard, which is how we do things and is how he pushes himself as an individual. He’s a great kid to be around.”

Other schools may have gotten in earlier than the Irish, but Calhoun doesn’t believe that will cripple their chances.

“In my opinion, I don’t care where you are in the recruiting process, there are a handful of teams that when you say their name rings out and I think in my opinion, Notre Dame is one of those schools,” he said.

“It doesn’t matter if they’re the first one or the 10th one or whatever. Notre Dame, just the name alone holds so much prestige and just the standard level of football. I definitely do not think they’re behind the eight-ball at all.”

Swint has had the chance to get on the road a bit and will look at where to go next soon.

“We want him to go see stuff, but we don’t want him to miss our high school summer,” said Calhoun. “We’re going to help him as much as he can.

“Obviously, if Notre Dame is of high interest to him, he definitely needs to get up there and see it. It’s a beautiful place. That’s definitely going to be his individual decision, but obviously I’ll be in that process with him. We’ll help our kids out as much as we can even if we have to physically take him there.”
