Dylan Downing’s plans for the fall changed tremendously when he suffered a fractured tibia last month, but the 2020 Indiana running back remains upbeat.

“Stay positive and know that my team is going to keep improving and once I get back, we’re going to be ready to go,” Downing said of his mindset.

“It’s going to be fun.”

As of now, the plan is for Downing to be back with his Carmel High School squad for the second week of sectionals.

He had also planned to go to Notre Dame’s game against Stanford last month, but had to cancel that.

“I just got off my scooter last week,” he said. “I didn’t know how much walking I’d have to do, so I thought it'd be best to watch the game from home.

“I’m walking now. I’m getting into rehab and all of that stuff. I’m looking to reschedule a visit to Notre Dame.”

Downing camped at Notre Dame this summer, but hasn’t heard directly from the coaches since.

“But my coach did talk to somebody from Notre Dame when we were planning on going to the game,” he added.

“I would like to go this fall, but with the playoffs and everything, we’ll just have to see. If not this year, then definitely next year.”

Downing said he’s looking forward to “seeing the atmosphere of the game.”

“I’ve never been to a game as a recruit, so I’d like to see how they do it for the recruits and for them to show me what they do on gamedays,” he added.

“I grew up watching Notre Dame. I’ve always liked them. Now that I’m being looked at them as a recruit for football, that’s even better. And it’s in-state, so to be able to check them out would be a good opportunity.”

The 6-foot, 215-pounder has early offers from Washington State and Toledo.

“It’s nice to know that I can go play football somewhere,” he said. “To have those as a reminder that you can do this.”

Prior to his injury, Downing visited Miami-Ohio and earlier this month, he made it to Ohio State.

“I want to get to Notre Dame for sure and then probably Purdue.”
