Aided by a special teams penalty, Pitt had a 17 plays opening drive that ended in a touchdown. That was the first time the Notre Dame defense gave up six on an opening drive all season and only the second time they gave up points.

That was not an indication of things to come, though. Much like they have all season, the Irish responded. They forced Pitt into three straight three and outs and only allowed them to reach Notre Dame territory twice the rest of the game.
