Typically, Notre Dame identifies a prospect and then tries to get that prospect on campus, but in the case of David Wohlabaugh‍, it could end up working the other way around.

The 2021 Ohio offensive lineman spent a week on campus for a camp over the summer and it made quite the impression on him.

“I thought it was a really great camp,” the 6-foot-4, 260-pounder said. “It seemed like a great environment to me. I like to value academics and things like that and I feel like Notre Dame would be a great place for academics and football as well.

“I got the chance to walk around every day and see different parts every day.”

But Wohlabaugh didn’t get much time with the coaching staff.

“They weren’t really interested in me at that time,” he laughed.

But the Irish are starting to show interest in the Stow, Ohio native now.

“I think it’s really cool, honestly,” Wohlabaugh I always thought it would be really cool to go to a college like Notre Dame because of all of the tradition they have there.”

The Walsh Jesuit High School standout has had communications with Notre Dame’s Director of Football Recruiting Aaryn Kearney about getting back to South Bend for a game, but he hasn’t been able to get there just yet.

“Hopefully, I’ll be able to get to one in the near future,” Wohlabaugh said.

He’s hit a few games already.

“I’ve currently been to a Syracuse game, a Pitt game and Cincinnati,” he said. “I thought Cincinnati and Syracuse were both very good schools. Syracuse, the environment there was just insane with the Carrier Dome and all of that.”

Wohlabaugh’s brother, Jack, is currently the starting center at Duke.

“The only time I’ve been there was for my brother,” he said. “I think that place is really awesome too…I think it’s a really nice school because of academics and stuff.”

Wohlabaugh’s father, Dave, played nine seasons in the NFL with the Patriots, Browns and Rams after a collegiate career at Syracuse.

“I think it’s really helpful for me,” Wohlabaugh said of having his father and brother as resources. “I can always ask my brother things I should look for with the recruiting stuff. Me and my dad watch film all of the time, critiquing technique and stuff like that and it really helps me improve.”

While his father and brother played center, Wohlabaugh is currently playing left tackle.

“I’ve been told my footwork is pretty good,” he said. “I play hockey also, so that really helps with my footwork. People also compliment me a lot on how I always try to keep running the guy and finish the play all of the time.”

Wohlabaugh has already started thinking about the most important factors in his college decision.

“The biggest thing for me will probably be the relationship with the coaches,” he said. “That’s really important, the relationships I have with them. Academics will probably be a big thing for me also.

“I’ve been thinking about it and I’ve been contemplating going into some sort of Engineering. I’m not 100 percent sure what branch to go off to though.”
