Cameron Martinez‍ was in South Bend a few months back, but the 2020 Michigan athlete got an even better sense of Notre Dame when he returned on Saturday.

“It was good,” Martinez said of his weekend trip to Notre Dame. “I had a really good time. Everything about it was so nice. I saw the facilities, I walked around campus, saw Touchdown Jesus, had some really good food. The game experience was really cool too.

“A lot stood out; the fans, when they talked about the sellout streak, that stood out a lot to me. Despite how cold it was, everyone was still there cheering them on.”

The 5-foot-10, 180-pound junior called Notre Dame’s defense “unstoppable” in its 42-13 win over the Seminoles.

“Florida State couldn’t really do anything on them,” he said. “They were driving it down on offense too, that was really impressive as well.”

The Muskegon High School standout got a preview of how the Irish offense was going to operate when he spoke with wide receivers coach Del Alexander just before he took the field.

“He just asked how the season was going because we’re still playing,” Martinez recalled. “He said, ‘We’re still not afraid to throw the ball despite how cold it is.’ He wasn’t wrong.

“It was a lot of catch-up talk. I know he was busy and had a lot to do, so it was good to just catch up with him.”

Martinez was also impressed with what he saw from the campus again.

“Campus was really nice,” he said. “I was there this summer, but on Saturday, I walked around and got a chance to see a lot. It was really nice and I enjoyed it.”

With his own season still going on, Martinez doesn’t have any more visits locked in at this point, but he does expect to get back out on the road.

“I plan on going back to Michigan because Michigan just offered me,” he said. “I plan on visiting there and Northwestern and Syracuse as well. After the season, when schools start coming up to the school, I’ll take it from there.”

In addition to Michigan, Martinez’s offer sheet also includes schools like Northwestern, Kentucky, Indiana, Syracuse and Boston College among others.

He does expect to get back to South Bend again in the coming months.

“Hopefully just get to know the coaches more, maybe go to a bowl practice or go down there in the spring and take it up another level with them, especially after the season when they started evaluating me more and things like that.”
