Justin Yoon Raves About New Notre Dame Commit Alex Peitsch
Notre Dame has made the long snapper position a priority under Brian Kelly as he has used a scholarship on the position during his time in South Bend.
Alex Peitsch is the next in line to follow Scott Daly and John Shannon as he committed to Notre Dame on Tuesday.
Former Notre Dame kicker Justin Yoon has seen Peitsch at Kohl’s Kicking camps over the last year and has been extremely impressed with what he has seen from the St. John’s College (D.C.) star.
“Having watched him a couple times at camps, he will make sure the ball is in the right place every single time,” Yoon told Irish Sports Daily. “It’s impressive to see a guy be able to snap and hit the same spot at the same speed every time.”
It might be an afterthought, but pinpoint snaps are crucial to the process of quality kicking. The less movement the kicker or punter does, the more likely it will be a good kick.
“It’s everything,” Yoon said of consistent snapping. “If the snap is always in the same spot, especially for the punter, he has to only make sure he does the same routine. He isn’t going to be reaching for the ball every time. It’s a big difference maker and helps his get off time easier. It’s a huge difference.”
When it comes to the kicking game, it’s the same principle, but a good snap makes the job easier for two players. It also allows the kicker to have a clear mind as he won’t have to worry about the snap and hold.
“If you have a good snapper for field goal, it’s the same thing,” explained Yoon. “You have a better off time, better operation and you don’t have to worry about the snap or the holder adjusting to the snap. It’s one of the most important things.”
Peitsch hasn’t only impressed Yoon on the field, but also off the field as he’s someone who will be able to handle the academic and social demands in South Bend.
“As a snapper, Alex has the right mentality and he’s a really good player,” stated Yoon. “As a guy, he’s got everything they need. He’s a good guy and normal kid. He’s a smart kid and he’s going to do what is right for the system.”
Yoon also agrees with Peitsch being the nation’s top-ranked long snapper.
“I would agree with the ranking from what I’ve seen,” said Yoon. “Alex has done a phenomenal job. I’ve talked personally to Jamie Kohl at a few of his camps and I think Alex will fit in really well. He has the talent.”
